Family Caregiver Training

 

Family Caregiver Training at Unity Developmental Disabilities Care Center (UDDCC) provides parents, guardians, and family members with the knowledge and skills they need to safely and effectively care for their loved one at home. Whether a caregiver is supporting a child with developmental disabilities, a youth in foster care, or an individual with TBI, UDDCC ensures they receive comprehensive, hands-on training that meets state and waiver requirements.


Our Family Caregiver Training program prepares families to confidently provide daily support while maintaining safety, dignity, and compliance.

Family Caregiver Training covers:


1. Daily Living & Personal Care Skills


  • Bathing, hygiene, grooming, and dressing
     
  • Meal preparation and nutrition
     
  • Mobility, transfers, and safe body mechanics
     
  • Home safety and environmental awareness
     

2. Behavior & Emotional Support


  • Trauma-informed care techniques
     
  • Understanding triggers, communication needs, and calming strategies
     
  • Positive reinforcement and structured routines
     

3. Medication & Health Support


  • Medication reminders (where allowed)
     
  • Health monitoring
     
  • Understanding medical appointments and follow-up care
     
  • Recognizing signs of illness or crisis
     

4. Documentation Training


  • Daily notes
     
  • Timesheets (LRI, respite, habilitation, etc.)
     
  • Progress tracking toward ISP goals
     
  • Incident reporting and communication logs
     

5. Emergency & Safety Procedures


  • CPR/First Aid
     
  • Mandt or crisis-prevention strategies
     
  • Evacuation, fire safety, and emergency planning
     

6. Program-Specific Support


Training is adapted for the type of service the family is providing, such as:

  • LRI (Legally Responsible Individual) Services
     
  • Supported Family Living & Shared Living
     
  • Respite Care
     
  • Foster Care Support
     
  • DD or TBI Home-Based Support
