Independent Living Services

 

Independent Living Services at Unity Developmental Disabilities Care Center (UDDCC) help individuals with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and transition-age youth build the skills they need to live as independently as possible. These services focus on teaching practical daily living skills, improving personal responsibility, increasing confidence, and supporting each person in safely managing their own home and community life.


Independent Living Services are person-centered and skill-focused, designed to support each individual’s unique goals for adulthood, independence, and self-sufficiency.

Independent Living may include training and support with:


  • Household management
    cleaning, laundry, organizing, home safety, meal planning
     
  • Cooking and nutrition
    meal prep, safe kitchen skills, grocery shopping, budgeting
     
  • Money management
    budgeting, banking, paying bills, understanding income
     
  • Personal hygiene and self-care
    grooming, dressing, daily routines
     
  • Medication reminders and health management
    understanding appointments, tracking health needs
     
  • Transportation and community navigation
    public transportation skills, safety awareness, planning routes
     
  • Job readiness and employment skills
    punctuality, communication, workplace expectations
     
  • Social and communication skills
    building relationships, boundaries, problem-solving
     
  • Transition skills for youth
    preparing older teens for adult responsibilities and self-advocacy
     

UDDCC provides Independent Living support:

  • In the home
     
  • In the community
     
  • In supported housing environments
     
  • As part of transition planning for older youth in foster care
     
  • Through one-on-one coaching or small-group instruction
